Supporting Student-Led Public Art

From Classroom to Community: Students Design Nature-Based Public Art for Business Walls.

The Pixelation Project

The Pixelation Project is a public art program that combines science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM) with the creativity of 4th and 5th graders. In this project, students make beautiful 'green wall portraits' out of moss that will be displayed publicly on business walls. This program is completely free for both schools and the businesses that get to display these art pieces.

Program Structure

In class, students learn about pixelation art. This means they see how small pieces, like pixels on a computer screen, come together to make a big picture. Each student works on a small part of a bigger picture, using moss to create their art. This isn't just fun; it also teaches them a lot about nature and how we are connected to it. It's important for kids to understand and care about the world around them, and this project helps do that.

After the students finish their art, it gets displayed in different places around the city. Every business that joins the project gets at least one of these moss portraits. These artworks make buildings look more beautiful and remind everyone who sees them about the importance of nature in our lives. The Pixelation Project is more than just making art; it's about learning, working together, and remembering how special our connection to nature is. And it's all free for the schools and businesses that take part.

1. Students Learn & Design

Part 1: Students learn about how nature can be combined with science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics through vertical gardening.

2. Students Make Natural Art

Part 2: Students create ‘pixels’ of vertical gardens that are placed around the city. This public art ‘pixelation’ project helps makes interiors a little more green!

3. Art Is Installed Publically

Part 3: Businesses allow us to hang the vertical gardens indefinitely in support of student-led public art at no cost to businesses.

Partnerships

Project Sustainability - 501c3 nonprofit

Project Sustainability organizes the Nature Public Art Program, which utilizes a Nature/STEM curriculum to create green walls with local schools.

Local Schools and Art Classrooms

We work with students at participating schools to learn about connecting nature to STEM fields. Students then engage in creating their own vertical gardens to be a part of a public art project. Program is free for schools.

Local Businesses for Art Placement

Participating businesses allow for us to bring the vertical gardens into their space in appreciation of student-led public art. Program is free for businesses.
